The Champions League quarter-final first legs delivered drama, shocks and moments that defined the ties. Atletico silenced Camp Nou. Bayern came to the Bernabeu and left with a lead. PSG gave Liverpool a mountain to climb. Arsenal scraped through in Lisbon. Now the second legs arrive and three of the four ties are still very much alive. Here is our full breakdown of what happened in the first legs and our five betting tips for the second legs this week.

What Happened in the First Legs

Barcelona hosted Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Wednesday and were in control for large parts of the first half. Then came the moment that changed everything. Pau Cubarsi was sent off after a VAR review for a last-man foul on Giuliano Simeone, and from the resulting free kick Julian Alvarez curled the ball into the top corner with stunning quality. Atletico defended brilliantly for the rest of the match and Alexander Sorloth doubled their lead with twenty minutes remaining. Barcelona had the better xG on the night, created more chances, and still lost 2-0 at home. They now travel to the Metropolitano needing to score at least twice without conceding.

Paris Saint-Germain were equally ruthless against Liverpool at the Parc des Princes. Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in what was described as a surprisingly passive performance from Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side showed little of the intensity that defined them at their best and now face a genuine fight for their Champions League survival at Anfield, needing two goals against the defending European champions.

The tie of the round so far has been Real Madrid versus Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu. Bayern came to Madrid on the back of their dramatic 3-2 comeback against Freiburg and produced a controlled performance to win 2-1. Luis Diaz and Harry Kane scored for the visitors before Real pulled one back. Bayern now take a one-goal lead to the Allianz Arena for the second leg on Wednesday.

The most straightforward first leg came in Lisbon where Arsenal ground out a 1-0 win through a late Kai Havertz goal. It was not pretty but it was effective, and Mikel Arteta’s side now host Sporting CP at the Emirates with the advantage firmly in their hands.

The Reasoning Behind Each Pick

Atletico Madrid versus Barcelona at the Metropolitano is the most open tie of the four. Atletico hold a 2-0 lead but Barcelona must attack from the first whistle and will get chances. The key statistical trend here is that eight of the last ten meetings between these clubs have produced goals at both ends, and Barcelona have scored in all ten of their Champions League matches this season. Atletico will have their moments on the counter-attack and Diego Simeone’s side have scored in five of their last six matches. Both teams to score feels like the natural outcome of a game where Barcelona have to throw men forward and Atletico have the quality to punish them.

PSG to qualify against Liverpool is a pick based on logic rather than romance. The defending champions lead 2-0, are in excellent form, and Liverpool have been deeply inconsistent this season with just two wins in their last seven matches. Anfield will be loud and Liverpool will give everything, but PSG have the experience, the squad depth and the two-goal buffer. This is a pick on the tie outcome rather than the match result, and the French champions should have enough to see it through.

Arsenal at home against Sporting CP with a 1-0 lead is one of the more comfortable positions any team can be in. Mikel Arteta’s side are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League, playing with confidence and have their full squad available. Sporting need to score twice in London, something they have not done in any of their European away games this season. Arsenal should control this and win comfortably without taking unnecessary risks.

The two Bayern Munich picks are deliberately combined. Over 2.5 goals in the Bayern versus Real Madrid second leg is backed by one of the most consistent statistical trends in this season’s Champions League. Bayern have scored 32 goals in ten UCL matches. Real Madrid’s last eight European games have produced 33 goals combined. Madrid must attack to overturn the deficit which means gaps will appear at the back. This fixture between the two most decorated clubs in European history almost never disappoints for goals, and this second leg is no different.

Bayern to qualify completes the five picks. They lead 2-1, are at home at the Allianz Arena where they have won six consecutive Champions League matches, and are unbeaten in 13 games across all competitions. Real Madrid’s Champions League magic is real and should never be completely discounted, but Bayern are simply the better team this season and should have enough to reach the semi-finals where Arsenal or Sporting await.

Good luck to everyone following along. Whatever happens across these two nights, the Champions League is delivering the drama it always promises at this stage of the competition.

The Reasoning Behind Each Pick

Aston Villa are the standout pick of the week. Unai Emery’s side have won seven consecutive Europa League matches and have not conceded against Bologna in either of their two previous meetings this season. Bologna are without first choice goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski through injury, have lost two of their last three home games, and are missing several key players. Villa are the better team on current form and should have enough to take a narrow first leg win in Italy.

Fiorentina not to lose at Crystal Palace is a well-supported angle in the Conference League. Palace have drawn their last three matches in the competition, including a goalless draw at home, and struggle to create clear chances consistently. Fiorentina arrive unbeaten in six consecutive games and are a well-organised side. With the second leg to come in Florence the following week, a draw or a Fiorentina win both feel more likely than a Palace victory, and the double chance covers both outcomes.

Porto versus Nottingham Forest is the most intriguing game of the night. Forest are fighting a Premier League relegation battle but have been a completely different side in Europe, with Igor Jesus transforming into one of the competition’s top scorers with seven Europa League goals this season. Crucially, Forest already beat Porto 2-0 at the City Ground in the league phase. Porto will push hard at home and Forest will not sit back. Both teams to score feels like the natural outcome.

Rayo Vallecano at home to AEK Athens in the Conference League is a solid home win pick. Rayo have been excellent in European competition this season and enjoy home advantage in this first leg. AEK have struggled on the road in the Conference League and face a difficult night at Vallecas. Rayo have the quality to control this game and take all three points.

The Shakhtar Donetsk versus AZ Alkmaar over 2.5 goals pick is backed by strong statistical evidence. Shakhtar have not kept a clean sheet in their last five European home games. AZ scored ten goals across their last three European matches, including a 4-0 demolition of Sparta Prague. Every one of the three previous competitive meetings between these sides has produced more than 2.5 goals. This has all the ingredients of an open, entertaining first leg in Krakow.

The Reasoning Behind Each Pick

Real Madrid are in excellent domestic form heading into this weekend, having won eleven of their last thirteen LaLiga matches. Mallorca sit in the relegation zone with just one win in their last five and have not beaten any team in the top seven all season. With Mbappe and Vinicius both expected to start, Madrid should have too much quality for a struggling home side.

The Freiburg versus Bayern both teams to score tip is backed by a strong statistical trend. Both sides have found the net in six of their last seven meetings and Freiburg have scored in twelve of thirteen home league games this season. Bayern will almost certainly rotate some players with their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid arriving next week, which could leave gaps defensively. Freiburg are dangerous at home and Igor Matanovic has been in fine form.

Atletico Madrid versus Barcelona has consistently delivered goals this season. Their recent head-to-head meetings have averaged 3.6 goals per game and both clubs arrive in strong attacking form. The added motivation of a Champions League quarter-final between them later this week means neither side will hold anything back. Over 2.5 goals feels like a well-supported call.

The Bayern over 1.5 goals tip stands on its own merits even with Harry Kane potentially missing due to the ankle injury he picked up on England duty. Bayern have scored two or more goals in 33 of their last 35 Bundesliga fixtures. Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala provide more than enough quality to cover for any absences against a Freiburg side that has conceded in nine consecutive matches across all competitions.

Lazio at home against Parma rounds off the slip. Lazio are a solid home side and Parma have had a difficult season on the road, carrying one of the poorer away records in Serie A. This is a straightforward home win backed by form rather than any major tactical angle.

Good luck to anyone following along. Check back tomorrow for our full UCL quarter-finals preview covering all four first legs starting Tuesday.

The 2025-26 Champions League quarter-finals have delivered one of the most mouth-watering last-eight draws in years. Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich. PSG vs Liverpool. Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid. Arsenal vs Sporting CP. Every single tie has storylines, quality and genuine unpredictability. Let’s get into it.

Bet responsibly. All tips are for entertainment and analytical purposes only. 18+. Please gamble responsibly.

Tie 1: Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich

First leg: Tuesday 7 April, Estadio Santiago Bernabéu (21:00 CET)
Second leg: Wednesday 15 April, Allianz Arena (21:00 CET)

The Story

No fixture has been played more often in Champions League history. This will be their 29th European meeting, with the all-time head-to-head standing at 12 wins apiece. Real Madrid have had the better of recent ties, progressing from each of the last four two-legged encounters between these clubs. But Bayern have not forgotten what happened at the Bernabéu in 2024, when a questionable refereeing call ended their semifinal hopes in controversial circumstances.

Real are without Courtois, Mendy and Rodrygo through injury for the first leg. Bayern are the form team of the tournament, nine wins from ten outings in the Champions League, with 32 goals scored and only 10 conceded. Their 10-2 demolition of Atalanta in the round of 16 sent a clear message. Harry Kane has 46 goals this season. Michael Olise has been electric. Vincent Kompany’s side are playing the best football in Europe right now.

Key Stats

Bayern: 32 goals scored in UCL this season, only PSG have scored more

Real Madrid: Unbeaten in last 9 UEFA competition matches at home

Bayern have won their last 9 Champions League matches

Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the round of 16

These two sides have combined for 61 goals in the Champions League this season

Betting Tips: First Leg (Bernabéu)

Match Result: Real Madrid to win or draw. At home, with the crowd behind them, Real Madrid rarely lose in Europe. Even weakened by injuries they have enough quality to avoid defeat in the first leg. Back Real Madrid double chance (win or draw).

Both Teams to Score: YES. Bayern have scored in every single Champions League match this season. Real Madrid have scored in 8 of their last 9. This is a near-certainty. Strong value pick.

Over 2.5 Goals: YES. These two teams have combined for 61 goals this season. The last three meetings between them produced 3, 4 and 5 goals respectively. The Bernabéu atmosphere will encourage an open game from the start.

Over 3.5 Goals: YES, value pick. Higher risk but given Bayern’s attacking output this season and Real’s attacking intent at home, three goals each is a realistic scenario. Worth including in a combination bet.

Harry Kane to Score Anytime: YES. Kane has 46 goals this season including 10 in the Champions League knockout stages alone. He scores in big games. Back him to find the net at the Bernabéu.

Tie 2: Paris Saint-Germain vs Liverpool

First leg: Wednesday 8 April, Parc des Princes (21:00 CET)
Second leg: Tuesday 14 April, Anfield (21:00 CET)

The Story

Revenge. That is the word that defines this tie from Liverpool’s perspective. Last season PSG knocked the Reds out in the round of 16 on their way to winning the competition. Liverpool were devastated. Now they meet again, this time at the quarter-final stage, with PSG defending champions and Liverpool hungry for retribution.

PSG are the best team in the world when they are at full throttle. Kvaratskhelia, Barcola, Dembele, Doue. Their attacking depth is extraordinary. They beat Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. Vitinha is the best midfielder in the competition. But they are not at fifth gear right now. They finished 11th in the league phase and needed to come through the play-offs. Liverpool meanwhile produced their best performance of the season, a 4-0 win over Galatasaray, to reach this stage.

Key Stats

PSG scored 8 goals in two legs against Chelsea in the round of 16

Liverpool beat Galatasaray 4-0 in their second leg, described as their best performance of the season

PSG have Kylian Mbappe who scored the second fastest hat-trick in UCL history this season

Liverpool have scored 500+ European Cup goals, only 6 clubs have ever achieved this

PSG beat Liverpool last season at both venues

Betting Tips: First Leg (Paris)

Match Result: PSG to win. At home, in the Parc des Princes, PSG are formidable. Liverpool’s domestic form has been inconsistent and Paris away is a brutal assignment. Back PSG to win the first leg.

Both Teams to Score: YES. Liverpool have attacking quality in Salah, Szoboszlai and Nunez and will not sit back at the Parc des Princes. PSG will score. Liverpool will score. Both teams to score is strong value here.

Over 2.5 Goals: YES. PSG have averaged over 3 goals per game in the Champions League this season. This has the feel of a high-scoring affair, particularly in Paris where PSG like to attack from the first minute.

PSG Asian Handicap -1: If you believe in PSG’s quality at home this is a value pick. They beat Chelsea 5-2 in the first leg. A comfortable home win is not out of the question.

Second Leg tip at Anfield: Back Liverpool and Both Teams to Score at Anfield. The Anfield atmosphere for Champions League nights is unlike anything else in football. Liverpool will push hard for the tie. Back them to win the second leg and both teams to score again.

To Qualify tip: PSG are slight favourites to go through overall, but Liverpool at Anfield in a knockout second leg is never a safe assumption. This tie could go either way. Value lies in a Both Teams to Score treble across both legs.

Tie 3: Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid

First leg: Wednesday 8 April, Olimpico de Montjuic (21:00 CET)
Second leg: Tuesday 14 April, Wanda Metropolitano (21:00 CET)

The Story

The most entertaining tie of the quarter-finals on paper. Hansi Flick’s Barcelona are attack-minded, play a high line and can be occasionally chaotic. Diego Simeone’s Atletico are defensively disciplined, dangerous on the counter and lethal at home. These two have met repeatedly in recent seasons and the matches are always full of goals and drama.

Barcelona dismantled Newcastle 7-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha are two of the most exciting attacking players in European football right now. But Barca’s defence remains a concern. They play a dangerously high line and Atletico are experts at exploiting space in behind. Julian Alvarez has 14 Champions League goals in his last 17 matches. This has goalfest written all over it.

Key Stats

Barcelona have outscored their last seven opponents 24-6 in all competitions

Atletico have won 23 of their last 26 home matches at the Metropolitano

Julian Alvarez: 14 UCL goals in last 17 matches

Barcelona play a high defensive line, and Atletico are built to exploit exactly that

These two sides met in the Copa del Rey semi-final this season — Atletico won that tie

ESPN predicts Barcelona 5-3 Atletico on aggregate

Betting Tips: First Leg (Barcelona)

Match Result: Barcelona to win. At home, with Yamal and Raphinha in this form, Barcelona are difficult to stop. Back Barcelona to win the first leg at the Montjuic.

Both Teams to Score: YES, strongest pick of the round. Atletico have Julian Alvarez, Griezmann and Sorloth. Barcelona have the best attack in Spain. Both teams to score is as close to a certainty as you will find in this round. This should be in every accumulator.

Over 3.5 Goals: YES, value pick. Barcelona vs Atletico consistently produces goals. With the high line Barca play and Atletico’s counter-attacking threat, over 3.5 goals across both legs looks very achievable. In fact over 4.5 for the tie is worth considering.

Lamine Yamal to Score Anytime: The teenager has been the best player in Spain this season. Against a high-pressing Barcelona side with space behind them, Yamal will have chances. Back him to get on the scoresheet.

Second Leg at the Wanda Metropolitano: Back Atletico to win the second leg. Simeone’s record at home is extraordinary, 23 wins from 26 matches. If Barcelona have a lead going into the second leg, Atletico are dangerous and will push hard. Back Atletico to win on the night at the Metropolitano.

To Qualify: Barcelona are slight favourites overall but this tie has upset written all over it. Value pick: Atletico to qualify at longer odds.

Tie 4: Sporting CP vs Arsenal

First leg: Tuesday 7 April, Estadio Jose Alvalade (21:00 CET)
Second leg: Wednesday 15 April, Emirates Stadium (21:00 CET)

The Story

Arsenal had the perfect Champions League campaign. Eight wins from eight in the league phase, no team has ever achieved that before. They beat Atletico Madrid 4-0. They beat Leverkusen 3-1 on aggregate in the round of 16. Mikel Arteta has built the most complete team in England and this is their moment.

Sporting CP should not be underestimated. They pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks in Champions League history, coming back from 2-0 down on aggregate against Bodø/Glimt in Lisbon to win 5-0 on the night and progress 5-2 on aggregate. They have quality throughout and the Alvalade is a difficult place to go. But Arsenal have already beaten Sporting 5-1 away in the league phase last season and 3-1 on aggregate this season over Leverkusen.

Key Stats

Arsenal: 8 wins from 8 in the UCL league phase, unprecedented in the competition’s history

Arsenal have scored 3 or more goals in 7 of their last 10 UCL home matches

Sporting CP beat Bodø/Glimt 5-0 on the night after trailing 2-0 on aggregate

Arsenal beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 in the league phase this season

Bukayo Saka is one of the form players of the season

Arsenal are the favourites to win the entire competition according to many analysts

Betting Tips: First Leg (Lisbon)

Match Result: Draw or Arsenal win. Arsenal away in Lisbon is not straightforward. Sporting are a good team at home and the Alvalade crowd will be behind them. Back Arsenal on the double chance (win or draw) for the first leg.

Arsenal to Win to Nil: Arsenal have the best defensive record in the competition. Sporting, while capable of scoring, will find it very difficult to break Arsenal down. Back Arsenal to win without conceding for value.

Over 2.5 Goals: YES. Arsenal score goals, lots of them. Even away from home they are not a team that sits back. Over 2.5 goals is achievable in this fixture.

Bukayo Saka to Score Anytime: Saka has passed 50 league goals for Arsenal and is one of the form players in Europe. On the right wing against Sporting’s left back, he will have opportunities. Back him to score.

Second Leg at the Emirates: Back Arsenal to win comfortably at home. If they come back level or ahead from Lisbon, the Emirates in a Champions League knockout night is an incredible environment. Arsenal to win and over 2.5 goals at the Emirates is strong value.

To Qualify: Arsenal are clear favourites and rightly so. Back Arsenal to qualify at the standard odds. This is the closest thing to a banker in these quarter-finals.

Best Accumulator Bets

If you want to combine picks into accumulators, here are our recommended combinations:

Safe Accumulator (lower odds, higher probability):
Both Teams to Score in all four first legs. Barcelona vs Atletico, PSG vs Liverpool, Real vs Bayern, Sporting vs Arsenal — all four to see goals at both ends. This is our strongest combined pick of the round.

Value Accumulator:
Over 2.5 goals in: Real vs Bayern + Barcelona vs Atletico + PSG vs Liverpool. Three of the four ties are almost certain to produce high-scoring affairs. Combine these three for a strong value treble.

Bold Accumulator:
Bayern to win first leg + Barcelona to win first leg + Arsenal to qualify + Both teams to score in PSG vs Liverpool. Higher risk, higher reward. Backed by solid data and reasoning.

Swedish football is back. Eight matches, 16 teams, and a full Easter weekend of action starting Saturday 4 April. Here’s what to expect — and where the value is.

After a long winter, Allsvenskan 2026 kicks off this Easter weekend with a packed opening round that already delivers some tasty fixtures. The defending champions Mjällby AIF face last year’s runners-up Hammarby on day one. Malmö — the overwhelming pre-season favourites — travel to newly-promoted Örgryte. And an electric Gothenburg derby looms on Monday.

Here’s our match-by-match breakdown, with a tip for each game.

Saturday 4 April

Degerfors IF vs IK Sirius — 15:00

Degerfors barely survived relegation last season and go into 2026 as one of the favourites to go down. Sirius, by contrast, arrive with genuine optimism — several experts tipping them to push into the top half this year.

This is a match between two sides who really need points from the off, but the quality gap favours the away side. The odds currently sit at Degerfors 2.60 / Draw 3.30 / Sirius 2.40 — making this a close call on paper, but we lean towards Sirius to get their season off to a winning start.

Tip: Sirius to win

Hammarby vs Mjällby AIF — 15:00

The match of the opening weekend without question. Last season’s table-toppers Mjällby meet last season’s runners-up Hammarby in what is effectively a statement game for both clubs. Hammarby have strengthened in the transfer window and will be desperate to go one better than second place in 2025. Mjällby, meanwhile, arrive as defending champions — but defending a surprise title is always harder than winning it.

The odds read Hammarby 1.68 / Draw 3.55 / Mjällby 4.20 — the market strongly fancies the home side. Hammarby’s crowd at Tele2 Arena on Easter Saturday will be enormous. Home advantage, quality reinforcements and motivation all point the same way.

Tip: Hammarby to win

Sunday 5 April

AIK vs Halmstads BK — 14:00

AIK had a disappointing 2025 — seventh place is not where a club of their size expects to finish. New season, fresh start. Halmstad are one of the sides many expect to be in a relegation battle and should be beatable at home for AIK.

This feels like a comfortable home win for a club desperate to restore some pride in front of their own fans.

Tip: AIK to win

Kalmar FF vs Västerås SK — 14:00

Both Kalmar FF and Västerås SK are newly promoted from Superettan, making this a fascinating clash of two sides who don’t really know where they stand at this level yet. Promoted teams tend to be full of energy in their opening fixtures, and both will approach this with nothing to lose.

Kalmar have more Allsvenskan experience historically and are slight favourites at home. We’ll back the home side but this is a low-confidence pick — a draw wouldn’t surprise us at all.

Tip: Kalmar FF to win or Draw (Double Chance)

Örgryte IS vs Malmö FF — 16:30

The story of the day for neutrals. Örgryte return to Allsvenskan after 16 seasons away — their last top-flight campaign was back in 2009. Their fans have waited a long time for this. Gamla Ullevi will be rocking.

And yet — they face Malmö FF, the overwhelming pre-season title favourites. Malmö are consensus favourites for the title with odds between 1.60 and 1.70 across the major bookmakers. The match odds sit at Örgryte 5.00 / Draw 4.20 / Malmö 1.49.

Emotion versus quality. Örgryte will be sky high. But Malmö are a completely different level. We back Malmö, but if you’re looking for a fun long shot, Örgryte at 5.00 is not the worst flutter on an emotional opening day.

Tip: Malmö FF to win

Monday 6 April (Easter Monday)

BK Häcken vs IF Brommapojkarna — 14:00

Häcken had a frustrating 2025 — tenth place for a club with their resources is underperforming. BP are perennial wildcards; hard to predict, capable of results against anyone on their day. Häcken at home should have enough, but their inconsistency is a real concern.

The odds are Häcken 1.58 / Draw 4.00 / BP 4.50 — the market is fairly confident in the home side. We agree, though not without some hesitation.

Tip: Häcken to win

IF Elfsborg vs IFK Göteborg — 14:00

A tasty western Sweden matchup. Elfsborg are one of the more consistent sides in the league and will fancy their chances at home. IFK Göteborg had a solid 2025 and many tip them to push for European places in 2026 — this away trip to Elfsborg is a tough opener to test that ambition.

Elfsborg at home is a reliable proposition. We back the hosts here.

Tip: IF Elfsborg to win

GAIS vs Djurgårdens IF — 16:30

The headline match of Easter Monday. GAIS have been one of Allsvenskan’s most exciting recent stories — back in the top flight and proving they belong. Djurgården are among the title contenders and arrive as narrow away favourites.

The odds stand at GAIS 2.38 / Draw 3.30 / Djurgården 2.60 — almost as close as it gets. Djurgården are quality, but GAIS at home on Easter Monday with a full crowd behind them is a proper contest. We’ll take a punt on the home side to upset the odds.

Tip: GAIS to win — Value Pick of the Round

The Big Picture: Who Wins Allsvenskan 2026?

It’s genuinely split. Most bookmakers list Malmö FF as slight favourites — a rebound story after their disappointing sixth-place finish in 2025. But media, coaches and AI simulations at the pre-season preview event pointed to Hammarby as the team to beat, backed by strong recruitment including Victor Lind. Defending champions Mjällby are the intriguing wildcard — harder to repeat a miracle than to create one, but don’t count them out. It’s a three-horse race, and any of them could be lifting the trophy in November.

It’s going to be a long, brilliant Swedish summer of football. We’ll be covering every round right here at Explored Football.
