Atletico Madrid versus Barcelona at the Metropolitano is the most open tie of the four. Atletico hold a 2-0 lead but Barcelona must attack from the first whistle and will get chances. Anfield will be loud and Liverpool will give everything, but PSG have the experience, the squad depth and the two-goal buffer. This is a pick on the tie outcome rather than the match result, and the French champions should have enough to see it through.

Arsenal at home against Sporting CP with a 1-0 lead is one of the more comfortable positions any team can be in. Mikel Arteta’s side are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League, playing with confidence and have their full squad available. Sporting need to score twice in London, something they have not done in any of their European away games this season. Arsenal should control this and win comfortably without taking unnecessary risks.

The two Bayern Munich picks are deliberately combined. Over 2.5 goals in the Bayern versus Real Madrid second leg is backed by one of the most consistent statistical trends in this season’s Champions League. Bayern have scored 32 goals in ten UCL matches. Real Madrid’s last eight European games have produced 33 goals combined. Madrid must attack to overturn the deficit which means gaps will appear at the back. This fixture between the two most decorated clubs in European history almost never disappoints for goals, and this second leg is no different.

Bayern to qualify completes the five picks. They lead 2-1, are at home at the Allianz Arena where they have won six consecutive Champions League matches, and are unbeaten in 13 games across all competitions. Real Madrid’s Champions League magic is real and should never be completely discounted, but Bayern are simply the better team this season and should have enough to reach the semi-finals where Arsenal or Sporting await.

Aston Villa are the standout pick of the week. Unai Emery’s side have won seven consecutive Europa League matches and have not conceded against Bologna in either of their two previous meetings this season. Porto versus Nottingham Forest is the most intriguing game of the night. Forest are fighting a Premier League relegation battle but have been a completely different side in Europe, with Igor Jesus transforming into one of the competition’s top scorers with seven Europa League goals this season. Crucially, Forest already beat Porto 2-0 at the City Ground in the league phase. Porto will push hard at home and Forest will not sit back. Both teams to score feels like the natural outcome.

Rayo Vallecano at home to AEK Athens in the Conference League is a solid home win pick. Rayo have been excellent in European competition this season and enjoy home advantage in this first leg. AEK have struggled on the road in the Conference League and face a difficult night at Vallecas. Rayo have the quality to control this game and take all three points.

The Shakhtar Donetsk versus AZ Alkmaar over 2.5 goals pick is backed by strong statistical evidence. Shakhtar have not kept a clean sheet in their last five European home games. AZ scored ten goals across their last three European matches, including a 4-0 demolition of Sparta Prague. Every one of the three previous competitive meetings between these sides has produced more than 2.5 goals. This has all the ingredients of an open, entertaining first leg in Krakow.

The Reasoning Behind Each Pick

Atletico Madrid versus Barcelona has consistently delivered goals this season. Their recent head-to-head meetings have averaged 3.6 goals per game and both clubs arrive in strong attacking form. The added motivation of a Champions League quarter-final between them later this week means neither side will hold anything back. Over 2.5 goals feels like a well-supported call.

The Bayern over 1.5 goals tip stands on its own merits even with Harry Kane potentially missing due to the ankle injury he picked up on England duty. The Story

Revenge. That is the word that defines this tie from Liverpool’s perspective. Last season PSG knocked the Reds out in the round of 16 on their way to winning the competition. Liverpool were devastated. Now they meet again, this time at the quarter-final stage, with PSG defending champions and Liverpool hungry for retribution.

PSG are the best team in the world when they are at full throttle. Kvaratskhelia, Barcola, Dembele, Doue. Their attacking depth is extraordinary. They beat Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. Vitinha is the best midfielder in the competition. But they are not at fifth gear right now. They finished 11th in the league phase and needed to come through the play-offs. Liverpool meanwhile produced their best performance of the season, a 4-0 win over Galatasaray, to reach this stage.

Barcelona dismantled Newcastle 7-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha are two of the most exciting attacking players in European football right now. But Barca’s defence remains a concern. They play a dangerously high line and Atletico are experts at exploiting space in behind. Julian Alvarez has 14 Champions League goals in his last 17 matches. This has goalfest written all over it.

They have quality throughout and the Alvalade is a difficult place to go. But Arsenal have already beaten Sporting 5-1 away in the league phase last season and 3-1 on aggregate this season over Leverkusen.

Second Leg at the Emirates: Back Arsenal to win comfortably at home. If they come back level or ahead from Lisbon, the Emirates in a Champions League knockout night is an incredible environment. Arsenal to win and over 2.5 goals at the Emirates is strong value.

The match of the opening weekend without question. Last season’s table-toppers Mjällby meet last season’s runners-up Hammarby in what is effectively a statement game for both clubs. Hammarby have strengthened in the transfer window and will be desperate to go one better than second place in 2025. Mjällby, meanwhile, arrive as defending champions — but defending a surprise title is always harder than winning it.

The odds read Hammarby 1.68 / Draw 3.55 / Mjällby 4.20 — the market strongly fancies the home side. Hammarby’s crowd at Tele2 Arena on Easter Saturday will be enormous. Home advantage, quality reinforcements and motivation all point the same way.

Sunday 5 April

AIK vs Halmstads BK — 14:00

AIK had a disappointing 2025 — seventh place is not where a club of their size expects to finish. New season, fresh start. Halmstad are one of the sides many expect to be in a relegation battle and should be beatable at home for AIK.

This feels like a comfortable home win for a club desperate to restore some pride in front of their own fans.

Kalmar FF vs Västerås SK — 14:00

Both Kalmar FF and Västerås SK are newly promoted from Superettan, making this a fascinating clash of two sides who don’t really know where they stand at this level yet. Promoted teams tend to be full of energy in their opening fixtures, and both will approach this with nothing to lose.

Kalmar have more Allsvenskan experience historically and are slight favourites at home. We’ll back the home side but this is a low-confidence pick — a draw wouldn’t surprise us at all.

Tip: Kalmar FF to win or Draw (Double Chance)

Örgryte IS vs Malmö FF — 16:30

The story of the day for neutrals. Örgryte return to Allsvenskan after 16 seasons away — their last top-flight campaign was back in 2009. Their fans have waited a long time for this. Gamla Ullevi will be rocking.

And yet — they face Malmö FF, the overwhelming pre-season title favourites. Malmö are consensus favourites for the title with odds between 1.60 and 1.70 across the major bookmakers. The match odds sit at Örgryte 5.00 / Draw 4.20 / Malmö 1.49.

Emotion versus quality. Örgryte will be sky high. But Malmö are a completely different level. We back Malmö, but if you’re looking for a fun long shot, Örgryte at 5.00 is not the worst flutter on an emotional opening day.

Monday 6 April (Easter Monday)

BK Häcken vs IF Brommapojkarna — 14:00

Häcken had a frustrating 2025 — tenth place for a club with their resources is underperforming. BP are perennial wildcards; hard to predict, capable of results against anyone on their day. Häcken at home should have enough, but their inconsistency is a real concern.

The odds are Häcken 1.58 / Draw 4.00 / BP 4.50 — the market is fairly confident in the home side. We agree, though not without some hesitation.

IF Elfsborg vs IFK Göteborg — 14:00

A tasty western Sweden matchup. Elfsborg are one of the more consistent sides in the league and will fancy their chances at home. IFK Göteborg had a solid 2025 and many tip them to push for European places in 2026 — this away trip to Elfsborg is a tough opener to test that ambition.

GAIS vs Djurgårdens IF — 16:30

The headline match of Easter Monday. GAIS have been one of Allsvenskan’s most exciting recent stories — back in the top flight and proving they belong. Djurgården are among the title contenders and arrive as narrow away favourites.

The odds stand at GAIS 2.38 / Draw 3.30 / Djurgården 2.60 — almost as close as it gets. Djurgården are quality, but GAIS at home on Easter Monday with a full crowd behind them is a proper contest. We’ll take a punt on the home side to upset the odds.
